9/8/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection: 9/8Opening GratitudeI want to open this Week in Reflection with gratitude. The world in which we live in can feel disconnected, and torn at times. We can become very reactive to moments and situations each day we encounter. In a world of constant contact and pressure lives our kids who spend a third of their day with adults and peers. Our students are great, and our staff love working with your children. It is hard to reflect upon the passion, compassion, and time placed in class, and student activities...being at school from sun up to sun down allows me a comprehensive view of the lives of our students and the adults they work with. It is all about connections. It is all about trust, and it is all about generational community values and kindness. It was awesome seeing so many families over the week at school events, and at the Geauga County Fair last weekend. We all cherish the small moments that we have with our families. Making memories is so important with the time we have with our children. This Week in Reflection is packed with tons of things our students encountered over Labor Day weekend along with preparing for the week to come. Geauga County FairEarlier in the week, I asked students to share some of the awesome events, competitions, and experiences they participated in during the 200th Geauga County Fair. We have a ton of students involved in Fair Boards, 4H, and skill competitions. It was amazing walking around to see all of the great things our students participated in. Enclosed are some images that were shared with me. The recognition and awards they received were many! We are so proud of them! Enclosed are a few examples of the accomplishments of our students. Monday is a day where we pause and reflect on patriotism. The last several years have been very trying for all of us. Through good and difficult times we must look to the sky and see the eagle soaring and be reminded of its vision, courage, and perseverance. It is hard to even fathom that over a generation of learners have crossed the halls across of our nation never fully experiencing our response as a country to the events of September 11, 2001. Most of us can recall where we were, and who was around us that day. As you come together this weekend with your family and friends-remember, recall, and embrace the little things in front of you...for they matter the most- family. 9/1/2023 0 Comments The Week in Reflection 9/1Valuing Hard Work Work is one of the greatest ways that we can give back to our community, state, country, and the world. What we do can be looked through various lenses. Regardless of our perspective, our work matters. This Monday we take time to pause our 'work' as a simple reminder of the value of our contributions. More importantly, Labor Day is an opportunity to spend quality time with our family We have seen some very abnormal weather in the last week, but soon we will see the change of scenery and be reminded how short summer is in Northeast Ohio. Yet, for most people in Chardon, we become acclimated to the upcoming season and shortened days. We remember that this is nature's way of nurturing itself after a long year. This is a perfect time for each of us to remember the simple things in life: Faith, Family, and Friends. For many people in Chardon, these reminders come in all shapes and sizes. They emulate stories, memories, and a reminder of how short our time can be with people. Faith can remind us of our own humanity, or even trusting another person. Having faith gives us a sense of hope and optimism in demonstrating our dignity to all people. The new season can provide us the opportunity to rekindle our belief and hope in humanity by the actions and responses that we demonstrate to others. Family is the root of our own autonomy. Growing up, we depend so much on our own parents/guardians and relatives to nurture and guide us through good and bad times. As we get older, we begin to develop independence from our family and we begin to gain--and sometimes-- lose their trust. CHS students aren't immune to these changes. We value that every student has their own story, values, and routines ---but what is essential is that our children take the time to recognize the importance of how family time allows for their independence to guide their choices and behaviors. Friends are essential to our development regardless of our age. We value the beauty of authentic communication that allows us to grow in our abilities in and out of school. Technology is a wonderful tool that allows us to communicate. It can become a double-edged sword in our ability to develop meaningful and long lasting relationships. Sending a quick message may suffice for a moment, but what interconnects us as humans is our ability to talk, share, and think in meaningful discussions. Transitioning to school life: Faith, Family, and Friends can connect us to a bigger story; a community. I am proud to see how our community has grown and transformed our values into something bigger than words on paper. As we quickly move into this new season, seize the opportunities to spend more time with the simple things in life...because we all are experiencing how life goes in the fast-lane. Be You, Be Kind, Be the reason someone smiles today. Activities Fair OpportunitiesStudents who are involved with the many clubs and activities at CHS were available during the lunch periods on Wednesday. We are grateful of the time that our student ambassadors and staff took to intentionally plan this experience for students to find opportunities to participate in. "Though not surprisingly at all, Student Liaisons to the BOE — Jen Kogovsek and Madison Primc — made Chardon very proud last night! We were IMPRESSED. Professional, well-prepared, and a well-designed/executed first presentation. It was clear they cared and took time with their assignment.
Certainly exemplifying many "C's" of our Portrait of a Hilltopper."

The Week in Reflection: 8/18
Welcome Back!
I cannot tell you how much I love opening day. The students were exactly like our staff. Hugging each other, excited, and even a little anxious with the feeling that we all get when we start a new year. Inside of months of planning, the operation pushed play. I was moved by the leadership of our upperclassmen guiding students who felt lost. It was at that moment, that I felt the rush of why we do what we do.
We love our kids, our community, and our purpose is open the door to learning, thinking, and serving. Without a doubt, the beginning of the year always can provide each of us ways to refine--but, our staff was absolutely jumping in. The bell rang and the halls where clear.
I am so proud of our staff, and our students. They are leaders and understand our purpose.
Purpose: It is a word that I say from time to time. It allows reflection, action, and a depth of questioning. We all have a purpose, and we are helping kids along their journey to find their purpose. Likewise, collectively as a school, we have a shared purpose in or mission, vision, and core values.
The short week that we had was good practice to the routines that we will model next week as we enter a full week. In this edition of the shortened Week in Reflection, some of the topics are good to review inside of the Family Reference Guide to prepare for as we enter next week. The video enclosed will give a brief highlight of the week and the upcoming full week.

I want to share one more lesson before I close this reflection. It is a lesson on treasuring every single moment this year as a parent and student. You see, I along with many of my fellow teachers and parents are in the midst of sending a child to college. The emotions that one feels is hard to express. These moments at Chardon High School, whether big or small, joyous or challenging, weave together the tapestry of growth that will forever be a part of your child's journey. Embracing each experience while you are in the moment. Hold onto these memories, let them shape you, and nurture the good times and more challenging experiences. With every moment, you're painting a portrait of that experience of being a Hilltopper, and by embracing the beauty in every second, you're ensuring that this masterpiece of their life is one filled with moments that tell a story of love, learning, and endless growth.
Have a beautiful weekend with your family and friends!

The Week in Reflection 5/19
Final Reflection of 2023
As a teacher, for many of my beginning years, colleagues would ask for my thoughts on a lesson that I had taught, or my principal would discuss an observation with me and ask me to reflect on my lesson. But other than those experiences, reflecting was not something that I could say I did on a regular basis. I was not intentional about it and did not fully realize the importance of doing so for many years. No single event transformed me into a reflective learner--but a culmination of many things: teaching, coaching, working, and children. My eyes began to open to a much bigger world and my place within it.
In 2003, I began to write more and I modeled this for my students as they began to journal, I made sure that every assignment had a purpose of engagement and my students began to blossom as readers, thinkers, and writers. It was that year that I was nominated to speak to the students at Commencement.
From that point forward, almost everything that I did was reflective. I became very involved in community engagement while reflecting on each experience as an opportunity to grow as a person. It just became my thing.
In order to bring our personal best into our classrooms each day, we (students and staff) must evaluate our own practice and use a reflective process to grow as people. We also need to help each other develop these skills. It is important that we model reflection and provide different ways for our children to reflect as well. Not only will we help them build their skills, become self-aware and develop a greater understanding of their interests and needs, but we will also provide them with learning experiences that will benefit them in the future regardless of where their education takes them or which careers they pursue later on in life.
Looking back at this year, it is hard to reflect upon the tens of thousands of printed pages from the Week in Reflection this year. It is a daunting novel, with a true beginning, a flood in the middle, and the 150th finish line next week. This first finish line doesn't have an ending for the Class of 2023. A perfect reminder was a phone call that I took this week while talking to a member of the Class of 1973. This call reminded me how connections, community, and traditions never graduate. This first finish line allows for new stories to develop from the class of 2023 while the rest of the student body writes their story. I really love and appreciate all of our students for who they are, where they are, and where they are going.
Reflecting is important for all of us because it’s how we evaluate our actions. We can explore who we are, whether looking at the qualities and traits that we convey to others, our behaviors, and how we interact with other people. It’s important that we continue to understand ourselves and work on bringing our best selves to our families every day and to those with whom we work. When we work on this together, we will have it become a regular part of our daily practice and will continue to grow. I believe in all of you and my hope is that you take time after exams to regroup, re-energize, and renew your purpose!
With love,
-Murray

You don't have to wait until your student is a junior or senior to start volunteering for After Prom. The money that we raise this school year will be earmarked for the next 4-5 years of After Prom events.
We have some key roles to fill for the upcoming school year. All of these roles (except treasurer) can be split between two co-chairs
- Chairperson to oversee the organization
- Treasurer
- Fall Concession Chair to oversee football & soccer concessions
- Winter Concession Chair to oversee basketball concessions
- Concession Supply Chair to keep stands stocked with food/beverages
- Senior After Prom Event Chair
- Junior Event Chair
Visit our website for more details about each of these positions
Don’t wait until your student is a senior or junior to start volunteering with Chardon After Prom. Many of our volunteers are parents of sophomores, freshmen, or even alumni! Money raised through next year’s concessions will be earmarked for future events.

Class of 2023: Parting Words
The very thing that they committed to year’s ago- rearing, raising, training you for independence- your parents now began to fear. I’m sure some may have been emotional; they may have been firm, or even built walls between you. Every sign that indicated you had learned and matured and were ready to face the world only reminded them how young you seemed.
But your parents couldn’t run from the truth. You were leaving and the day was coming soon. Some of your parents may have been so desperate to hang on that they couldn’t even exult in your growth and progress. Why, you ask, a lot of it was due to your maddening independence, that I-can-do-it-myself attitude that reminded both of them so much of their own adolescence, or even that look that asked, “Why do you have to know everything?” or “What does it matter to you?” may have cemented in their aching heart the truth: You had become your own person.
It’s what they had wanted. But, your time together this year went by too quickly. There may have been days when they didn’t want it at all. Yet, throughout all the fights over applications, and deadlines, your parents knew that this was for the best. It’s time. And maybe from their perspective, there will never be a good time. Your parents have realized that the longer they hang on to you, the more they protect you from the real world. If you don’t jump in, you’ll never find yourself. And so they must nudge you from the nest.
Seeing you leave for college or your career may remind them of the first time they let you go in the water. Only this time they are not going to be at arm’s length, ready to grab as you panic. They will not stand by with reassuring words that say, “I’m just seeing if you can float alone.” For this is the real thing. Your parents will let you go; you will be on your own, and they will back away.
The other metaphor that may come to mind is your first time on two wheels. Mom or dad ran along beside, reaching, adjusting, holding the seat, helping you gain momentum and speed. Soon you were on your wobbly way, unable to turn, riding through puddles, over curbs, slowing to painful, tumbling stops before leaping up to try again.
Now they will give your two-wheeler one last shove and watch. No more running alongside. You had enough of that. You won’t admit it, but there will be times when you whirl around expecting your parents to be there. They won't be, and you will think twice about calling, about asking to be bailed out of a jam.
There will be bumps and bruises and as much as they would like to protect you from them, your parents will walk away to see you grow. You may be swindled, maybe even endangered because of your own innocence. Your parents could intervene, could warn you, or could slow you on a headlong path to believing someone because “he seemed like a great guy, or she seemed like a great girl.” They could urge you to let time be the test of relationships, to think twice, even three times, before investing in anything. But you must learn from your own mistakes.
Your parents and teachers know because they have been there. We all have gone against our own better judgment, so why shouldn’t you? Even I knew better, or should have. I have been told enough times by my own parents. But some things you must learn on your own. You may fail, and you will kick yourself and wonder why you forged ahead. There will come a time that you will know that your life was shaped by the lessons you could learn only from your own mistakes.
Graduates of 2023, I am at an age, where I finally can realize the wisdom, encouragement, and love that a parent gives to a child. As a parent of two beautiful daughters--the love shared between parents to their children is never a superficial root that may drive you away from their love, but a permanent foundation that grants you the opportunity to blossom into an adult. You must realize that as you transition into a new chapter of your life, your parents, brothers, sisters, and even your friends are going through the same transition. I know that your parents are so proud of you. Even through the good and bad times of this year, you have grown in such a way that radiates the beauty of every one of you.
Graduates, look around. You are so gifted and talented. Your class emulates success. Academically, athletically, socially, and within the community, Your parents, and teachers have watched you grow daily and we are so proud to honor you today in your accomplishments. Many people state that you are the future. You are more than that. You Are The Strength Of Today.
Forever in my heart,
Mr. Murray

The Week in Reflection: 5/12
I think I can. I think I can
One of the key lines from the book is I think I can, I think I can.
Throughout the week, this mantra crossed many of our minds at CHS. With the beautiful weather surrounding this week, the last round of AP testing, Spirit Week, Prom, After Prom, Playoffs, Senior Awards, and literally 87 make-up tests--it was a marathon. A good marathon for adults certainly has benefits, but many students and staff alike are longing for the finish line. We will get there, but the mantra needs to change from I think I can to I know I will.
There are so many events that have either happened this week, this weekend or leading into next week that is important to read these details carefully. Make today great!

Chardon High School Students Earn National Awards For Community Service Impact
91 UNA-USA National Community Service Awards
14 Zero Hunger Awards
96 ServeOhio Community Impact Award
“The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have been a directional beacon not only for UN member states, but also for their citizens, including, and perhaps especially—their young people. As a movement that empowers and engages Americans to support the United Nations and the SDGs, UNA-USA is thrilled to partner with InnerView once again,” says Rachel Bowen Pittman, Executive Director of the United Nations Association of the USA. “We are thrilled to be involved with a platform that not only helps to capture the impact that young people are having, but to recognize and to celebrate their achievements. Kudos to all those who have committed to staying the course and doing their part to help actualize the SDGs!”
"Youth voices, engagement, and insight are crucial ingredients for Ohio’s prosperous future,” said William Hall, Executive Director of ServeOhio. "We are honored to celebrate outstanding youth who reach beyond themselves to help their neighbors and communities – transforming themselves and others – which shapes who we are and who we will become as a state. Congratulations to the award recipients and thank you for your service!"
Students from Chardon High School delivered the most impact for SDG 4-Quality Education. With a collective impact of 3859 community service hours this school year, Chardon High School earned the Sapphire Award.

The Week in Reflection 5/5
Celebrating Today
Regardless of how you are celebrating, we are very excited about the end of state testing season. The planning and preparation that goes into state testing are expected, but not enough recognition goes into the work that our administration, counselors, and intervention specialists put in to make the test accessible. I would like to take a moment to thank Mr. Higham for his work to run the testing system this week, Mr. Hurlbut for running AP Testing, and Ms. Pavicic and Heather Patterson for running MAP Testing! Of course, we cannot forget the unbelievable focus that our teachers and students placed into preparing and learning the benchmarks and standards that create the data that we long to see!
Celebrate Good Times, Come On!
After a action filled week with some crazy weather, it is time to celebrate good times! It is easy to get lost in all of the tests, communications, tasks, meetings, and re-scheduled events. It is so important to reflect on all of the positives and ways that those we encountered where influenced by our care.
This week, I saw the following actions to celebrate!
- Several students holding the door for others.
- Thousands of students working meticulously on AP Tests, and End of Course Exams.
- A group of students moving tables and sitting with a student who was having a rough day.
- Hunter Greco and Brandon Fatur signed a National Letter of Intent to play college baseball.
- Our CBI Teachers were recognized for their Innovation, and Creativity for their program.
- Our parent volunteers continued to plan and organize After Prom which is one week away!
- We celebrated more senior night events at Chardon Memorial Field.
- Our teachers collaborated in Professional Learning Communities preparing for the end of the year.
- The sun came out! The April showers will bring out all of the May flowers.
- We collected canned goods for the Geauga County Food Drive.

The Week in Reflection: 4/28
The Work of our Hands
Our hands tell a story. Our hands are more than just functional tools that help us perform daily tasks; they are a physical manifestation of our experiences, our journeys, and our stories. Every wrinkle, scar, and callus on our hands tells a tale of hard work, perseverance, and resilience. From the delicate hands of an artist to the rough, weathered hands of a farmer or mechanic, our hands reveal the unique paths we have taken in life, and the challenges we have overcome along the way.
The last few weeks of school will provide an opportunity to use our hands to demonstrate so many accomplishments. The hands of hard work will determine the outcomes that we desire. Embrace these moments, even through the discomfort. The hard work and sacrifice that you put in today will provide endless opportunities tomorrow. Make today a work of your hands.
The Schedule For Next Week: (Special Schedule for Testing)
These state achievement tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. These tests help guide and strengthen future teaching so we can be sure that we are preparing our students for long-term success in school, college, careers and life.
I was able to go into every single course that is testing this week to remind the students of the things that we can control: Our attitude, effort, and approach to these tests. I was so impressed with their attention and left feeling great about the work our students and teachers put in to getting the students to this point. We have great students!
Transportation will run at regular times throughout testing. All Auburn Students will take their tests during the time we have scheduled at Chardon High School. All grade levels not testing will have a late start; Seniors must complete their capstone projects. Please watch the video below for additional details.
Which tests will be given for what grade level? (See the schedule online)

2023 New York City Latino-Themed Trip - April 20-22, 2023
¨The Spanish NYC trip was a highlight of my high school years and something I'll always remember. In just three days, we toured the Statue of LIberty, had an amazing view atop the Freedom Tower, took the Roosevelt Island cable car up into the sky and through the skyscrapers, laughed while learning Spanish dances, put our Spanish knowledge to use while exploring Spanish Harlem with a native tour guide, experienced Times Square, and much more! I loved traveling with all grades from CHS and talking with students I've never met before. Thank you Senora Niedzwiecki, Senora Tekavec, Madame, and the many chaperones for taking us on this trip and giving CHS students this opportunity.¨ - Julianne Sweet, CHS Senior & Spanish 5 student

The Week in Reflection 4/21
The Final Push
Seniors:
After today, you have 20 class days and 36 calendar days before graduation. It can seem like a lifetime or can be a flash in front of you. The choice is yours. Seniors, it seems like the finish line has already come and gone...but there is still essential time left. Time for yourself, time for each other, time for learning, and memories to be made. You only graduate high school once, Embrace it, live each moment, be active in your choices. The choices that you make today can determine the person that you become. Be true to who you are and keep your eyes on the goal--you are too close to let go of your dreams.
Juniors
Your 25 school days are going to be relentless. Focus on managing your time on what you can control. Your job is your academics. Your job is transitioning into the leaders of our school. Your job remains clear; YOU matter, YOUR grades matter; YOUR decisions matter. Learn from those that have gone before you and seize little opportunities that arise. We believe in you.
Sophomores
Your 25 school days linger with a reminder that you are about to transition into a challenging year. Many of you are learning the difference between dependence versus independence. The time is now to walk the talk. You are just coming out of your shell, and wondering what is up, down, and around you. You have seen so many challenging moments with relationships, coursework, and leadership but you are wondering if anyone notices you. We do, but we are not going to hold your hand through this--it is time to choose. We will always be there for you.
Freshman
Your 25 school days are determined by the habits that you have made. So many people have walked beside you, guided you, and assisted you. You recognize that you are a part of a bigger family but sometimes feel like the little sibling. You have an essential role. You are the key to the transition of our 8th graders. What you say---they believe. What you do---younger students follow. In reality, your task is enormous in living our core values not only for yourself but for your classmates. Believe in YOU!
8th Graders
Your 25 school days are so imperative to your maturation and growth. SO many of you are ending this year with high school credit along with a graduation seal through the Circuit of Success--and that is very exciting! At times, it has felt like you were the only ones in the building this year. Our staff have spent so much time and energy in guiding you and investing in you because you are essential part of our story. Your story is just beginning and the time is NOW to be the leader that we prepared you for. Seize these days to look in the mirror and reflect on your growth along the way---all the while finishing your work and making those marks!
Staff
You are the conductor of the music that we hear each day. Sure, the sound may resonate well from a distance, but only you see what needs to be refined. Continue to coordinate the sound with the beauty that sets the tempo of our pulse as a whole. After most performances, the conductor bows while the orchestra receives the accolades. WE see your influence. WE appreciate your countless preparation. WE see your impact- especially after a long tour. YOU ARE APPRECIATED!
The Schedule For Next Week (Regular)
End of Course Assessments
These state achievement tests tell us how well our students are growing in the knowledge and skills outlined in Ohio’s Learning Standards. These tests help guide and strengthen future teaching so we can be sure that we are preparing our students for long-term success in school, college, careers and life. Transportation will run at regular times throughout testing. All Auburn Students will take their tests during the time we have scheduled at Chardon High School. All grade levels not testing will have a late start; Seniors must complete their capstone projects. Please watch the video below for additional details.

After Prom Important Information
My name is Marijana Benjamin, and I am the mom of a CHS senior. I am also the chair of After Prom. Time is going so fast in our kids’ senior year! I am inviting you to be a part of this year and get involved in their After Prom event. Join me and some other wonderful parents to plan a fun and special After Prom event just for our seniors and their guests. We will be decorating the school, planning casino and other games, and organizing refreshments.
We need a lot of help! Here is a sign up genius where you can choose how you are willing and able to sign up. This is only for the planning, and a sign up genius for the actual event will be coming out in April.
We will begin our planning and decorating workshops on March 13th. We will meet on Mondays and Wednesdays at 7:00pm in the school cafeteria up to the event. I welcome any time you are able to give to help!
It has been my privilege to be chair of After Prom for the past 6 years! This year is extra special. I sincerely hope that you join me in making our kids' final high school days memorable!

Closing Message: A reflection from a senior parent's perspective during the next 4 weeks
Do you I am your biggest fan? Do you know that I will always be there during good times and bad? Do you know how much my love is unconditional for you?
I am so proud of you, and I know that these last days of high school are going to be tough for you. I know that you are spent, exhausted, and ready to move on...but, never forget how you got to this moment. Never forget the failures and success that refined you. Never forget the support that each of us provided for you and always will.
So, in these last school days live every moment in the present. Love every celebration, and know that journey only begins when you cross the finish line. You are almost there! Hang on, push forward, dig deeper, and know that my embrace is a door away. We believe in you--BELIEVE IN YOUR ABILITY-- your journey is a moment away!
Have a beautiful weekend with family and friends!
